"Brooke is the newest artist to partner with us on our latest art project. Building on our relationships with the skateboarding community, and with no small amount of thanks to George Powell at Skate One Corp / Powell Peralta, and 3LT Pro Team member (and skateboarding legend) Ray Barbee, Brooke has produced a series of images paying tribute to Ray, and to his commitment to photography, and related images paying homage to skateboarding."
I was commissioned by '3 Legged Thing' to create a range of packaging design bringing homage to skateboarding culture, history and iconography. The Illustrations were a celebration of some of skateboardings greatest icons. We started with professional photographer, and skateboarding legend Ray Barbee.
The design itself had to work split into four images, as well as working as one big image. The benefit of this is that it can be wrapped around a product box, and also be used as a website banner, social media post etc.
After making a bunch of concepts, we decided to go with the 'Living Room Design' featured above. It allowed for adding a lot of skateboarding imagery, whilst still making the focus of the work flow. All of the Illustrations are designed to interact with one another, creating a path for the audiences eye to cruise around the image soaking in all of the hidden iconography. After a few more amendments, the final artwork was created and is featured below.
After creating the 'Ray' graphic, we went on to create one based on Bucky Lasek, a professional skateboarder, rally driver, and all around extreme guy with a love of tortoises. The graphics created after 'Ray' would take centre on making a loose connection to the pros old skateboard designs, as well as keeping a heavy focus on the classic iconography of skateboarding.
This design was based on an original Sean Cliver skateboard graphic, I completely redesigned the composition to suit the brief from '3 Legged Thing' and added in a bunch of extras. Below are the concepts, and final result of the 'Bucky' Graphic.
